This month, Will Frampton, Construction Manager at MCS, marks an incredible 25 years in construction. In light of this significant milestone, we interviewed Will on his experience in the construction industry so far:

What was your first job in construction?

When I was 16, I left school and started working for a local hard landscaping company, and then once I was 18, I got a job with a local builder.

What made you want to join the construction industry?

I took interest in construction from school initially. I enjoyed being hands-on when I first left school, and I liked the atmosphere on site and being around tradesmen. Growing up, I loved playing sports and being part of a team, and I found that similar feeling when on a construction site.

I then took interest in the technical aspect of construction and started getting involved in detailing, design, sequencing and planning, where my passion began to grow.

What challenges have you faced?

I struggled with concentration in school, and I wasn’t a fan of being sat at a desk all day. My previous role as site manager, and now as construction manager, gave me a good variation that helps me to stay focused.

What are some highlights of your career?

My biggest career highlight has to be being promoted from site manager to construction manager. I’ve also had the privilege of working on some great schemes such as St Paul’s Girls’ School and Wilberforce House, that will have a lasting impact within the educational sector and beyond.

What made you want to join MCS?

I first came to MCS as one of my oldest friends worked here and I was looking to work for a reputable main contractor.

I originally started out as a working foreman, before stepping up to assistant site manager, site manager, and now as construction manager. The reason why I have stayed at MCS for as long as I have is because the company has always looked after me, as well as given me the opportunity and training that has allowed me to progress in my career.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their career in construction?

It’s a great industry to work in if you enjoy a fast-paced lifestyle. My advice is to pick a direction early on and learn on-the-job, whether that’s a trade, management or design, and follow it through, as this will help make you more rounded as an individual!
