On Thursday 14 May 2026, the new River Park Cricket Pavilion in Winchester was officially opened in a celebratory ceremony attended by local dignitaries, project partners, and members of the community.

The Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Sudhakar Achwal, was joined by Mike Caldwell from The Pavilion Project and Cllr Martin Tod to cut the ribbon and formally declare the pavilion open.

Speaking at the event, Cllr Martin Tod reflected on the significance of the new facility and the collective effort behind its delivery: “We've ended up with this amazing and beautiful building that I think is a genuine addition to the city and is something that will come to be loved, respected and seen as one of the many things that helps make our city special.

“And of course, none of this would have happened without the people who've done so much to make it possible… To MCS Construction, you can have the best idea in the world, but if you don't build it, it's a bit of a showstopper, so thank you to them for putting it up.”

The Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Sudhakar Achwal, also addressed guests during the opening ceremony, commenting:  “I'm sure you all agree, the pavilion looks absolutely fabulous, and to see so many people here today is a sign of that success.

“The building is shaped like a cricket bag, so that's a line under it, saying that this is a cricket pavilion, but it's not just a cricket pavilion, yoga can take place here, perhaps a wedding reception, who knows… It is my great pleasure to be here to open this pavilion for all. I declare it officially open.”

Developed through close collaboration across the project team, the new pavilion will serve as both a key sporting venue and a vibrant social hub, strengthening the home of Winchester Cricket Club while providing a welcoming and versatile space for residents and visitors alike.
