Following the safe demolition and 100% recycling of materials from the old, dilapidated pavilion in May 2025, construction of the new pavilion at North Walls Recreation Ground is progressing well and is rapidly taking shape.

Groundworks began with 1,200mm-deep excavations in preparation for piling operations. Pile mats were installed, followed by the installation of 30 structural piles to form the primary foundation support. Subsequent excavations exposed the pile caps, after which formwork (shuttering) and reinforcement cages were set in place. The areas were then backfilled and concrete poured to form the pile caps and ground beams, providing a robust foundation for the new structure.

Then saw the commencement of the substructure blockwork followed by the block and beam floor, continuation of drainage works, and installation of external manhole chambers to serve the attenuation tank system. During the same period, structural steelwork began, followed by installation of the splash course, gas membrane, and the start of Superstructure brickwork in September.

This week, the project team has reached the second lift of internal blockwork, with internal and external scaffolding erected to facilitate safe truss installation and continued brickwork progress.

Delivered on behalf of Winchester City Council, the new pavilion will provide a modern, accessible, and sustainable community facility, representing a significant upgrade from the previous building and reinforcing Winchester’s commitment to quality construction and environmental responsibility.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Rekan Limited and Ridge and Partners, with MCS appointed as the Design & Build contractor.
