Brickwork Progress at Museum of Farnham

MCS has been working closely with Simpson Brickwork Conservation to begin rebuilding five window arches on the second floor of the Museum of Farnham. The process starts with the installation of a timber frame within each arch, providing the necessary support before the bricks are carefully laid over it to form the arch.
Within the roof structure, the MCS team has constructed timber-framed box guttering, which will be finished with a lead dressing before work begins on rebuilding the surrounding parapet wall above, as well as the associated chimneys.
All brickwork for the arches, chimneys, and parapet wall has been individually hand-carved by the Simpson Brickwork team, and they’ve refurbished the original inner skin blocks from the arches, replacing any broken sections with new brick, adhered by a whiting and shellac compound. Each piece will be precisely positioned in sequence, ensuring the gauged brickwork maintains both structural integrity and the building’s original historic character.
On behalf of, and funded by Waverley Borough Council, this restoration will help preserve the Museum of Farnham as a valued heritage landmark, safeguarding its history and ensuring it can be enjoyed by future generations.
