The new extension at The Study Prep School comprises of a hybrid steel frame and cross laminated timber (CLT) main frame erected and carefully attached to the adjacent main school hall, which remained live throughout the construction works.

The new CLT frame incorporates a lot of exposed and treated timber roof and floor panels including special acoustic treatment at ceiling level over the double height auditorium.

This design provided MCS with the opportunity to demonstrate its ability to deliver innovative and precision detailed schemes.

The building incorporates feature natural ventilation ducts located on the sides of the building and louvres drawing cold air from below ground up and into the new facilities.

Today the new 2-storey building provides a new reception area leading to a welcoming exhibition space, which also acts as the hall foyer, a new performance hall located to the front of the building with retractable seating linking to a first-floor gallery.

An inviting, naturally daylit staircase leads to the upper floor where the library is located, in a prominent position placing learning at the forefront of the arrival to school.

Light and airy classrooms are arranged over two floors, overlooking the playground, with cloaks and toilets easily accessible from the classrooms. Direct access to outside space is achieved by the introduction of balconies at first floor level. The design provided an opportunity for MCS to demonstrate its ability to deliver innovative and precision detailed schemes.
