Low Carbon
Building
Shrewsbury House School
MCS designed and built a new colonnaded sports pavilion with changing rooms and learning space adjacent to Chessington World of Adventures, in Chessington on behalf of Shrewsbury House School.

This project was the sixth project completed for the school Trust, all negotiated and completed initially through a preconstruction services agreement, which developed into the main contract.

The D&B project involved a new planning application, design and construction of a SIPS framed thermally efficient building to achieve a 35% carbon reduction, to comply with local planning policy.

The design incorporated roof mounted PV panels, underfloor heating and LED lighting. The building is all electric and heated via air source heat pumps which are highly energy efficient, together with electric car charging points, which have been incorporated into the design and are ready for the next generation of school transport.

The new building is clad externally with western red cedar from a sustainable certified source. The external double glazing incorporates solar control and thermal efficient glass.

Due to the site location the project involved extensive ecology-based surveys and site works to protect the local habitat and environment.

Externally, large areas of wildflowers have been planted to encourage biodiversity and bat boxes have also been installed.

"Both project and site management has been of a high standard with Health, Safety & Security clearly a priority. I would not hesitate in recommending them for future projects."
