Live Care Site

Prior's Court School

MCS was appointed to deliver a new two-storey residential accommodation building designed specifically to support students with severe autism. The development provides 24 fully en-suite bedroom units, shared kitchen facilities and dedicated live-in carer accommodation and nursing facilities, creating a safe, supportive and carefully structured living environment.

Constructed within the boundaries of an existing specialist autism campus, the project required exceptional care and sensitivity throughout the build process. The works were undertaken in the centre of a live environment supporting vulnerable children and adults, meaning construction activities had to be carefully planned and managed to ensure minimal disruption while maintaining the highest standards of safety and respect for residents and staff.

The design and construction presented a unique challenge: delivering an extremely robust building fabric capable of withstanding demanding daily use, while still creating a calm, welcoming and homely residential setting for students. Achieving this balance required close collaboration, strong architectural detailing and the use of high-specification materials combined with exceptional workmanship.

Through careful site logistics, meticulous planning and a commitment to quality, the project was delivered successfully within the operational environment of the facility.

The completed building has already demonstrated significant benefits for residents. The design incorporates specialist features aimed at reducing sensory stress and supporting individuals with autism, including carefully considered colour schemes, controlled lighting and layouts that minimise noise, heat and visual overstimulation. These elements provide clear visual cues and create a more predictable and comfortable environment for residents.

As a direct result of the building’s thoughtful design, the facility has recorded a 28% reduction in behavioural incidents, demonstrating the positive impact that carefully designed environments can have on the wellbeing and daily lives of young people with autism.
