High Street Retail Store Transformation

Works are progressing at great pace at Surrey County Council’s former Debenhams High Street store in Winchester, with many of its historic features - including gold shop front lettering - revealed during the careful demolition works.

With the handover of three ground-floor retail units now complete, the fit-out work is underway for future tenants - Nando’s, Five Guys, and Pizza Express - who are preparing their individual spaces to reflect their unique styles and functional requirements.  These retailers will be ready to welcome customers just in time for the busy Christmas season.

In addition to these units MCS has been instructed to create a smaller 4th retail unit on the ground floor.  Other works include: creating a new electric substation for the new power supply, creating a plant enclosure at roof level and completing the external shop front façade entrance works.

This extensive refurbishment project involved the complete transformation of a 50,408 sq. ft. building that had undergone multiple extensions over the past 150 years. The work included a full interior and roof strip-out, the removal of asbestos, and the dismantling of mechanical and electrical systems and equipment, returning the structure to its original empty shell.

On Friday, we had the pleasure of sharing the fascinating history of this building with fellow construction professionals from Winchester: Adam Tapin, Chris Fry, Rich Knight, and Nikos Derlere of Ridge and Partners.
