Guildford Lido

Following a competitive tender process, MCS was selected to deliver critical construction and refurbishment works at Guildford Lido, on behalf of Guildford Borough Council.

The scheme was driven by two key goals: to provide a modern new building that respects the historic character of the old Lido which was built in 1933, and to create a more accessible and welcoming environment.

To turn this vision into reality MCS began by carefully removing the existing outdoor changing facilities, breaking out the existing concrete slab and subbase and carrying out extensive and critical alterations to the below ground drainage system.

A new subbase and concrete slab was then laid and the construction of the new outdoor changing facilities began, which today features two sweeping timber canopies supported on a larch glulam frame interspersed with a series of pitched tile clad cupolas. These raised sections of roof are designed to bring natural light and ventilation into the changing spaces.

New cubicles were then fitted, containing private changing rooms, family rooms, showers and toilets beneath the canopy, painted in a series of different colours to clearly identify the various uses and create a bright, welcoming space.
