Health & Safety Awards Finalist

MCS is delighted to have been selected as a finalist in the ‘Occupational Health and Well-being Initiative Award’ and ‘Innovation Award’ categories at The Building Safety Group (BSG) Awards for its commitment to continuous business improvement.

BSG, with over 50 years’ experience, are the UK’s largest construction safety group, serving over 800 members across 3,500 locations. BSG has over 40 directly employed advisers based throughout the country, providing health and safety support.

MCS’s Innovation Award entry centres on its innovative behavioural safety campaign called ‘Think! Safety First’ which was launched earlier this year. The campaign is designed to reduce the number of workplace incidents caused by human behaviour. By using evidence of behavioural science, the aim is to shape the workplace safety culture and eradicate inappropriate behaviour that increases risks at work.

MCS’s entry for the Occupational Health and Well-being Initiative Award focusses on MCS's free CPD Mental Health training for subcontractors with the objective of trying to help the ‘one worker in six’ who is experiencing depression, anxiety or other stress related problems. This concerning statistic equates to 350,000 construction professionals in the UK.

Once the subcontractor completes the training and in recognition of their achievement, the delegate keeps their well-deserved certificate and MCS plants a tree in their name (via National Trust) to help tackle climate change and support healthy life for years to come. A growing body of research shows that spending time around trees decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increases people’s sense of wellbeing.
